What is Sabor a Malaga?

Sabor a Málaga is an initiative launched in 2011 by the provincial government of Málaga together with over 400 companies in the agricultural and food industry. The brand represents a collection of high-quality products from Málaga and aims to promote them both locally and internationally. Sabor a Málaga strives to unite all these products under a common image to make them easily recognizable to consumers.

Products covered include olive oil, goat cheese, wine and spirits, as well as a wide range of fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, and cured meats. Especially during holidays like Semana Santa (Easter) and Christmas, the region's sweets and pastries become prominent.

By highlighting the quality and uniqueness of these goods, Sabor a Málaga also aims to increase sales and strengthen Málaga's agri-food sector. This, in turn, helps stimulate the local economy and create jobs in the agricultural and food sectors. The brand is open to producers, shops, restaurants, and hotels that wish to benefit from the advantages associated with Sabor a Málaga. Read more (in Spanish).

Often coincides with Las Cruces de Mayo on May 3rd

May 3rd is a special day in Andalusia and Spain in general, as they celebrate the Day of the Cross, or the Day of the Crosses. The day is most often associated with the cities of Cordoba or Granada, but it is a tradition found throughout Spain.

The day itself goes by a multitude of names: Las Cruces de Mayo (the May Crosses), Dia de la Cruz (Day of the Cross), and Fiesta de las Cruces (Festival of the Crosses).

The day consists of displays of two to three-meter-high decorated crosses. Groups of all kinds gather, including religious brotherhoods and social groups, as well as individuals or neighborhood associations who decorate a cross as best they can, often with any donations or proceeds going to charity or funding future religious processions in the town or city.

The crosses themselves are usually decorated with flowers and often adopt themes, a nautical theme being quite typical in Nerja given the town's fishing industry heritage. In addition to flowers, the displays will consist of all sorts of objects, plants, silk, and carpets – basically anything goes, as long as it contributes to the display in some kind of symbolic way.

In Nerja, the Balcón de Europa is always the location where one of the crosses is displayed (organized by the town hall), and there is usually another one on Calle Pintada.
