Recently, we recommended our favorite zoo, a 2-hour drive from Nerja, to two families with children and animal lovers.
Zoo de Castellar Animal Rescue Center
Zoo de Castellar, located in the picturesque village of Castellar de la Frontera, is not a typical zoo as you might know it, but an animal rescue center that has opened its doors to the public. It offers visitors a chance to meet and get to know animals that have been rescued from difficult conditions.
A Home for Rescued Animals at the Zoo Near Nerja
Founded in 1998, Zoo de Castellar began as a sanctuary for animals confiscated from illegal trade. In 2002, the center opened its doors to visitors with the aim of educating the public about the importance of animal welfare and conservation. Here you will find a variety of animal species, from big cats like lions and tigers to colorful birds and reptiles.
One of the unique aspects of Zoo de Castellar is the opportunity to get up close and personal with many of the animals. Visitors can participate in guided tours where they have the chance to feed and interact with certain animals under the supervision of staff. This creates an unforgettable experience and strengthens understanding of each animal's individual needs and history.
Education and Awareness
The center places great emphasis on education. Through various programs and workshops, visitors, especially children and school groups, learn about the importance of animal welfare, conservation work, and the problems caused by illegal animal trade. Zoo de Castellar strives not only to rescue animals but also to spread awareness about how we can all contribute to protecting our planet's amazing wildlife.
Plan Your Visit to Zoo de Castellar

Castillo de Castellar in Castellar de la Frontera
When we first visited Zoo de Castellar, we also stayed at Castillo de Castellar. It offers a fantastic view, and the children found it exciting to stay in a medieval castle/fortress. It is located in the charming village of Castellar de la Frontera and dates back to the 13th century.
Castillo de Castellar is nestled in the Alcornocales Natural Park, surrounded by beautiful nature and traditional whitewashed houses. The view from there is absolutely magnificent!
