Nerja, located on Spain's sunny Costa del Sol, is not only known for its beautiful beaches and picturesque white houses but also for its fantastic hiking trails that attract nature lovers from near and far. Surrounded by the impressive Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park, the area offers a variety of trails suitable for both beginners and experienced hikers.

We prefer to hike in autumn, winter, and spring, but if you want to hike in water/rivers, such as Rio de Chillar, it might be most pleasant to hike in the summer when it's nice to have your feet cool in the fresh water or dip into one of the small "pools" or "pozos" that form along the river further upstream.

Tips for those who want to try hiking with children

A short hike that is perfect to bring children along on (perhaps 7 years and up) is the one located above Capistrano. If you search on the map, you will see that the "Starting point" is marked. It's easy to see where it begins as it's quite a wide path to start with, then it becomes winding and a perfect adventure for children. It's about a 40-minute brisk walk uphill, and once you reach the top, you can sit down for a snack and enjoy the view, then the descent is faster.

1. Río Chíllar route

NOTE: We have sought information from the tourist information office in Nerja and the town hall but have not received an answer on when it will reopen. Rio Chillar has officially been closed to the public since COVID, but we hope it will reopen soon!

One of the most popular hikes in Nerja is the trip along the Río Chíllar. This unique experience involves hiking directly in the riverbed, surrounded by high canyons and refreshing waterfalls. The route is relatively easy and suitable for families, but be prepared to get your feet wet! During the warm summer months, this hike offers a refreshing break from the heat.

We recommend wearing sneakers, even if you expect them to get wet, as the hike is partly in the riverbed on round stones. Some people buy water shoes, which work if you don't have sensitive feet or aren't going too far up the river.

Also, expect to walk a bit before the riverbed becomes water-filled, and bring some snacks and water to keep your energy up.

2. El Cielo (Heaven's Peak)

For those seeking a more challenging hike, El Cielo, at 1,508 meters above sea level, is an excellent choice. This peak, meaning "Heaven" in Spanish, offers outstanding panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the surrounding landscape. The hike is demanding and takes about four hours one way, but the reward at the top is well worth the effort. Note that the last stretch up is very steep.

3. Frigiliana from Nerja

The charming village of Frigiliana, known for its narrow, cobbled streets and whitewashed houses, is just a few kilometers from Nerja. A popular hiking trail connects the two towns and takes you through the Andalusian landscape, past olive groves and with spectacular views of the coast. This moderate route is perfect for a day trip.

4. Navachica

As the highest peak in Sierra Almijara, Navachica stands at 1,831 meters. The hike to the summit is strenuous and recommended for experienced hikers, but the views over both Málaga and Granada provinces are outstanding. The route often starts from the El Pinarillo recreation area and passes through varied terrain, including dry riverbeds and forested paths.
