Las Cruces de Mayo in Nerja – A festival of adorned crosses, flowers, tradition, and community

In charming Spanish Nerja, a festival called "Cruces de Mayo" is celebrated every year. This festivity, which has its roots in the late 19th century, is both a celebration of spring, similar to Walpurgis Night, and a cultural phenomenon in the region, with particular significance in Nerja, Frigiliana, and Maro.

Origin and legend of Cruces de Mayo

Fiesta de las Cruces, or "festival of the crosses," is celebrated on May 3rd in many parts of Spain and Latin America. Its origins are religiously rooted in the legendary search by the Byzantine Empress Saint Helena for the cross on which Jesus died. However, the festival also has ties to pagan traditions introduced to Spain during the Roman Empire, similar to the celebration of Walpurgis Night. According to legend, in the sixth year of the reign of Emperor Constantine the Great, Constantine faced barbarians at the Danube. One night, he saw a cross in the sky with the words "In hoc signo vincis" (By this sign you shall conquer). Constantine had a cross made and carried it before his army, leading to an easy victory. After his return to the city, and realizing the significance of the cross, Constantine was baptized as a Christian and ordered the construction of Christian churches. He sent his mother, Saint Helena, to Jerusalem to find the true cross, which she eventually did after testing three crosses on the sick and dead, where the true cross had healing powers. Veneration of the true cross, and the use of pieces from it as relics, began at this time. Saint Helena died praying that all Christians would commemorate the day the cross was rediscovered.

Cruces de Mayo in Spain

In Spain, particularly in Córdoba, various groups—often linked to religious brotherhoods that organize processions during Holy Week—gather to decorate a large cross with flowers. They choose a beautiful location, such as a square or street, and also decorate the area around the cross with typical and traditional objects such as a guitar, an embroidered shawl, old clay pots, and even an old sewing machine. For the cross belonging to the Hermandad de Nuestra Señora del Carmen, "Queen of the Sea," they use fishing nets and fishing gear. For San Isidro, "the plower's saint," they include crops and traditional foodstuffs.

Dese objects, reminiscent of the past and the city's traditions, are arranged into an artistic display that attracts many visitors. Although it is usually the brotherhoods that handle the decorations, groups of friends and neighbors, youth groups, or charitable organizations can also come together to create these beautiful events.

How the tradition of Cruces de Mayo began in Nerja

According to locals, the tradition in Nerja began as a celebration on the night of May 1st, where young men from the village gathered to serenade the young women. This was known as "echar los mayos."

Cruces de Mayo in Córdoba

Even though Córdoba is a bit far from Nerja, it's worth mentioning that the festival is particularly grand in Córdoba. If you have the opportunity to go there in early May, you will see Cruces de Mayo in full bloom. Each "barrio" (neighborhood) has its own beautifully adorned cross, and they compete to see which barrio ultimately wins. It's a popular festival throughout the city and a wonderful experience.
