Parking in Nerja – different options

In Nerja, several parking options are available, both free and paid. Street parking is free, but it can be difficult to find a spot during the summer months. There are also several paid parking lots in and around the city center, such as the municipal underground parking near Balcón de Europa and the large outdoor parking lot in the center, "Los Huertos de Carabeo".

Blue markings on the street, what do they mean?

Unlike other cities in Spain, Nerja does not have a "blue zone" where you need to pay to park on the street. This means you don't have to worry about finding parking meters or ticket machines in these areas. If you find a parking space on the street (where it is legal to park), you do not need to pay.

Yellow markings on the street, what do they mean?

Yellow markings on the street indicate no parking. It is also, just like back home in Sweden, forbidden to park where signs indicate this, such as no stopping or no parking zones.

Paid parking in Nerja

For those who prefer the security of paid parking, there are a couple of large parking lots:

Parking at supermarkets in Nerja

Parking at Lidl and the newly opened Aldi is free. Other supermarkets such as Carrefour and Mercadona offer parking where the first hour is free if you shop – don't forget to tell the cashier that you have parked. These parking lots can also be a good option if you plan to make a short visit nearby for some sightseeing.

Parking during holidays in Nerja

During local festivals and holidays, it can be more difficult to find parking, and temporary paid parking may sometimes be introduced to handle the increased number of visitors. In the summer, municipal parking in the city center may have attendants where you pay a small fee (e.g., 1 euro) to the parking attendant. Above Burriana in the summer, there might be parking attendants who charge a few euros for parking.

Parking at attractions such as the Nerja Caves

When you visit the Nerja Caves, there are parking spaces right outside. If you use the Nerja tourist train (see bottom of linked post), you don't need to worry about parking as the train takes you directly to and from the caves.

Extra tip: Always check!

It is always best to double-check local signs for specific parking regulations. Rule changes may occur that affect where and when you can park, especially during special events/holidays or tourist seasons. For example, there are some parking spots near Torecilla beach where parking is prohibited during the season for horse and carriage rides for tourists. This is clearly indicated on signs.
