Once a sleepy fishing village on Spain's fantastic Costa del Sol, Nerja has transformed into a vibrant tourist town. It offers an abundance of exciting activities that guarantee a fun and memorable vacation. Regardless of age and interest, Nerja has something for everyone – nature lovers, history enthusiasts, party princesses/princes, epicureans, adventurers, and more. Here we list some of the activities we think you won't want to miss!
1. Discover Nerja's fascinating caves
Explore Nerja's fascinating caves, where you can admire breathtaking stalactite formations and learn about the region's ancient history. These enormous caves were discovered by a group of young people in the 1950s and have since become a popular tourist destination. They are also known in Spanish as Cuevas de Nerja and are one of the biggest attractions in the area. The caves extend over an area of approximately 5 kilometers and feature fantastic natural formations. You can also learn more about the caves' history by visiting the adjacent cave museum. This is truly a must-visit for anyone coming to Nerja.
Buses go up to the caves from the Nerja bus station, or you can take a long walk there (5 km from the Balcón de Europa). Here are the caves located

2. Activity in Nerja - Horse riding
There are several stables around Nerja, one example is Andale Riding Centre, where you pay to ride in the mountains, by the beach, and in the rivers. You can specify your skill level when booking. They offer everything from beginner to advanced tours.
3. Beach activities - Nerja's wonderful beaches for sun worshippers and adventurers
Nerja's beaches boast wonderfully crystal-clear waters (especially magical when there's no wind) and go from golden to stony. There's a beach for everyone here! Here's a small selection of beaches you can visit in Nerja.
Burriana Beach
For beach lovers and adventurers, there's the popular Burriana Beach with restaurants, activities, and shops. Here you can book water sports such as SUP, kayaking, jet skiing, tubing behind a motorboat, or other adventurous activities like paragliding, and more. You can also rent a sun lounger or sunbed at an affordable price, or lay your towel directly on the sand.
Water sports at Burriana
If you're looking for adventure, don't miss the water sports at Burriana Beach. Here you can rent kayaks, paddleboards, and other water sports equipment to explore the coast and have fun in the water. Whether you're a beginner or experienced, there are activities for all levels. You can paddle along the coast, try surfing, or test your balance on a paddleboard. There's also the opportunity for snorkeling and diving to discover the underwater world. So take the chance to try some exciting water sports during your stay in Nerja.
Restaurants etc. at Burriana
Burriana Beach also offers a wide range of beach bars and restaurants where you can savor delicious local cuisine. Take a stroll along the promenade and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. Burriana Beach is perfect for both relaxation and adventure.
Playa Torrecilla
Below Plaza de los Cangrejos, where the "restaurant stairs" are located, you'll find Playa Torrecilla. It's a slightly smaller beach where high or low tide makes a big difference in how much sand you have to lie on or how much of the stone walls are covered by water. Off Torrecilla beach, you can snorkel in several reefs. Be sure to check out the snorkel map, which you can find physically on the small mini-pier just west of Torrecilla beach.
Playa Playazo
West of Torrecilla beach and all the way beyond Punta Lara lies Playa Playazo. Translated into English, it means approximately "the big beach". Here you'll find many Spaniards in the summer, and typically they set up their beach tents and spend entire days there with their extended families. There are large parking areas along the beach, and unlike Burriana Beach (which is very touristy), parking is usually not a problem here.

4. Activity in Nerja - Hike in Sierra de Almijara and Rio Chillar
Unleash your inner adventurer and hike in the Sierra de Almijara mountains surrounding Nerja. The many hiking trails offer spectacular views of the coast and an opportunity to see the local wildlife. You can choose between short walks or longer hikes depending on your ability and time. One of the most popular hiking trails is Rio Chillar, where you can walk along the river and swim in natural pools. Remember to bring comfortable shoes (we recommend sneakers you don't mind getting wet – because they will get wet), water, some nuts/snacks, and sunscreen for a pleasant and safe hike.
NOTE - Rio Chillar has been closed since 2023 due to fire risk. Currently (updated April 2024), it is still closed due to "littering" and fire risk. It is unclear when it will reopen to the public.
Tip - hike from Nerja to Frigiliana! A cool hike in a dry/wet river (depends on the time of year) with many exciting passages. Open to everyone!
5. Activity in Nerja - Balcón de Europa / City
Experience local culture by visiting the Balcón de Europa, a picturesque viewpoint offering panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea. The balcony was named by King Alfonso XII when he visited Nerja in the 19th century and fell in love with the view. Here you can enjoy a wonderful view of the sea and the surrounding cliffs. It's a popular spot for both tourists and locals to stroll and admire the sunset. On summer evenings, the balcony often hosts live entertainment and art exhibitions. Around the "balcony" you can buy ice cream, have a coffee, or eat dinner. Don't miss the chance to visit this iconic spot while you're in Nerja.

6. Activities in Nerja - Taste local dishes and wines
A trip to Nerja is not complete without trying the delicious local cuisine. The town has a wide range of restaurants and tapas bars offering regional delicacies. Enjoy fresh seafood, grilled meat dishes, and traditional tapas. Also, try local specialties such as "pescaíto frito," fried fish, and "ajoblanco," a refreshing soup made with almonds and garlic. Complement your meal with a glass of local Andalusian wine for a true taste experience. Whether you're a foodie or just want to try something new, Nerja's food and wine will enchant your taste buds.
Some scattered tips include "Ayos" on Burriana beach, where you can eat paella traditionally cooked over an open fire. Sollun, Oculto, or Oliva are restaurants with a bit more fine dining. There's something for everyone in Nerja; you'll find Poké Bowls, Tapas, Indian, Thai, Chinese, burgers, wraps, etc. etc.
