Festivities on July 16th

Throughout the year, various saints are celebrated in Nerja, especially those who protect fishing or bless harvest and animal husbandry.

Virgin Carmen, one of the saints celebrated in Nerja on July 16th, is honored throughout the year by all devotees and fishermen in the parish of El Salvador, the beautiful church located on the square near Balcón de Europa.

When Virgin Carmen's name day takes place on July 16th, it is celebrated with various events held between July 15th and 17th. One of the major events is a sea procession, always on July 16th, attracting people from all over Nerja and surrounding areas. Virgin Carmen (her image/statue) travels by boat from Torecilla Beach, slowly "marching" (or "boating" :)) along the coast before landing at Calahonda Beach.

Pictures from previous processions can be seen on Nerja's Tourist Office website.

The Story Behind Virgin Carmen

Virgin Carmen, also known as Nuestra Señora del Carmen, holds a special place in the hearts of many inhabitants of coastal towns across Spain. The tradition of celebrating this saint dates back to the 18th century. She is considered a protector of seafarers and fishermen, and many pray for her protection and guidance at sea.

A Day Filled with Tradition and Joy

The celebration of Virgen del Carmen in Nerja begins early in the morning with a beautiful mass in the El Salvador church, where many faithful gather to honor and pray to Virgin Carmen. The church is decorated with flowers and candles.

After the mass, a procession begins through the town's streets. The image of Virgin Carmen is carried on the shoulders of devoted believers and is followed by music, singing, and applause from spectators. The procession slowly moves towards the sea, where the most symbolic part of the celebration takes place.

Blessing of the Sea

At La Torrecilla beach, the procession reaches its climax. Here, the statue of Virgin Carmen is carried onto a boat and taken out to sea. Fishermen and sailors pray for a safe year at sea and for good catches. This ritual is a reminder of the town's close ties to the sea and its importance for the community's survival.

Festival and Celebration

After the blessing of the sea, the celebration continues on the beach and in the town's streets with music and dance. Come and celebrate the town's cultural heritage on July 16th!
